Astoria events feature breweries, poets gathering

Beer Boom on the Columbia River
New Englund Fish Company of Oregon processing plant in Astoria,Buoy Beer will start production on a three-barrel pilot system with plans of increasing up to a 20-barrel system. The brewery will set up shop in early 2014 in the old New England Fish Company building on the Columbia River waterfront in Astoria. It will feature a full restaurant serving fresh seafood from Eric Jenkins, former executive chef at Oregon State University’s Seafood Cooking School.
Stout Month in February
astoriatravel3As days get darker, Fort George Brewery sheds light on Astoria with its annual Stout Month featuring specialty stout creations made with cherries, gourds, hot peppers, chocolate, bourbon barrels and more during the entire month of February. The Oysters and Stouts Brewers Dinner features a five-course pairing of Willapa Bay oysters and small-batch stouts. The Festival of the Dark Arts takes over the Fort George campus for a night of fire dancers, tarot card readers, tattoo artists, live music and more than 60 creative stout samples from around the Northwest. All Stout Month activities, including the Festival of the Dark Arts and the Oysters and Stouts Brewers Dinner will be held at Fort George. Fisher Poets Gathering
astoriatravel4Anchoring in Astoria for the 17th annual Fisher Poets Gathering, Feb. 21-23 fishermen and women from across North America will gather to share their wind-blown and weathered stories of life on the briny deep. During the three-day event, more than 80 participants will perform emotional poems, rowdy readings and powerful prose inspired by the salty seas at numerous intimate settings downtown. Events will be held at various restaurants, pubs, museums and performance venues throughout downtown Astoria. The full schedule of speakers and events will be announced in January 2014.
