If you think exercise has gone to the dogs, you are right. These days, more and more businesses are springing up that encourage pet owners to exercise with their canines.
Interestingly, pets have waistline problems, too. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 53 percent of dogs in the U.S. are overweight along with 69 percent of humans. Still, dog owners do tend to be more active than non-owners.
Some of the new businesses like Leash Your Fitness offers outdoors activities for human-dog pairings. Sue Foster of Denver-based Iron Doggy sells special leashes that fasten to an owner’s waist, making it much easier to run with dogs. And Noelle Blessey, co-owner of Thank Dog! Bootcamp, leads workouts in parks while Suzi Teitelman Arab sells Doga Dog DVDs to people around the world.
