Park gives glimpse of Tlingit and Haida culture

Native Americans
The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes are renovating Juneau’s Thane Ore House into a Native Culture Immersion Park that will strive to promote cultural awareness and preservation of Tlingit and Haida cultures.
The park will feature a building retrofitted to look like a traditional long house with a gift shop retailing authentic souvenirs and a restaurant, where visitors will be able to eat traditional foods like salmon, blueberries, and Hudson Bay tea. The park also will offer guided tours and teach residents and visitors alike about Alaska Native art, dancing, and cultural practices.
The park’s land lease was recently finalized in September 2016 and the next step is to complete a feasibility study on the property. The project will contribute to workforce development and job creation, as well as bolster the local economy and is expected to open up additional economic opportunities for community partners.
