Peony and Iris farm – Visit Brooks Gardens near Salem
Brooks Gardens near Salem, Ore., is a peony grower of bare root and potted peonies for gardens and landscapes. Although the gardens are past “the bloom”, those interested in peonies are invited to checkout the online catalog and start ordering bulbs in September and October.
The owners raise over 350 varieties of herbaceous peonies, including the Intersectional Itoh varieties. It offers a considerable selection each year; both online and at our farm.
Bare root peony plant orders are shipped during the fall months. The staff grow and ship generous, #1 quality, 4-6 eye, bare root peony stock and offer 150 varieties of peonies in pots at the farm, during the May/June peony bloom season.
Brooks Gardens History:
In the early 1980’s the company farmed raspberries, pumpkins, nursery stock, conifers and also started a mail order Christmas Holiday wreath business.
In 2000, they purchased this farm and started growing peonies in the fields adjacent to the massive iris gardens. The iris are set in a botanical arboretum garden started in 1988 by iris hybridizer/collector Roger Nelson. The wandering pathways enthrall visitors.
The peony fields and iris gardens are open to customers each bloom season. Our 2014 season runs now through June 22nd, 2014. Potted peony plants, iris rhizomes, cut peonies and bouquets are for sale at the farm during the May/June bloom season.
Brooks Gardens specializes in herbaceous (bush) peonies, Intersectional peonies (also referred to as Itoh peonies; a cross between a bush peony and a tree peony) and a few tree peonies.
The selection of herbaceous (bush) peonies includes black-red, coral, maroon, orange, pink, purple, red, salmon, white, yellow; as well as bi-colored and tri-colored peonies.  It also offers  double, Japanese/anemone, semi-double and single varieties of peonies (types of petal structure). Peonies come in a range of styles and fragrances. Some peonies smell ‘better than a rose’.
Gardeners select and grow many upright peony plant varieties as well as some of the most outstanding fragrant varieties. Newer American hybrid peonies join the old fashioned heirloom peonies that have thrilled gardeners for decades. The staff searches out new and rare peonies to grow and propagate for garden flower beds and landscapes.
The staff has a lot of fun each bloom season and enjoy seeing and hearing our customers share their delight with the success of their peonies. We’re happy to share growing and peony plant care tips. Growing peonies is rather simple; we’ll show you how.
The garden was thrilled to receive the Grand Champion and Best in Show awards for the peony ‘Bob’ at the 2011 American Peony Society floral exhibit. It also received Court of Honor awards for ‘Ave Maria’ in 2013, and ‘Coral Supreme’ in 2012.
