Hopefully, dogs and people will get to explore the trails to Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint again this summer. The butte, located in east Bend, offers panoramic views of the high desert and Oregon mountain peaks.
Currently, COVID-19 has forced closure of the viewpoint. All Oregon state parks were closed March 23 until further notice. The closure includes all state parks, including all overnight campgrounds, trails, viewpoints, restrooms, and picnic areas and all other facilities. This is part of the statewide effort to reduce transmission of COVID-19.
The old cinder cone offers three hiking trails winding up through juniper and sage. On the west side of the summit, visitors can view Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Black Butte and Mount Hood.
