Tacoma Senior Centers offer full schedule of activities

Tacoma Seniors, don’t stay at home and mope because you don’t have friends and nothing to do. There is a lot happening at your local senior centers (http://www.cityoftacoma.org).

The City of Tacoma owns and operates two senior activity centers:, Beacon Activity Center (253) 591-5083 in the downtown area and Lighthouse Activity Center (253-591-5080) on the east-side.  The Centers provide a comprehensive array of programs designed to improve and maintain health, stimulate learning, and provide socialization, recreational, and volunteer opportunities for people age 50 and older.
For example, Lighthouse offers a jam-packed calendar of daily events that range from gentle yoga, wood carving and quilting to tai chi, Reader’s Theatre and dancing.
The two senior activity centers are also meal sites where nutritious lunch is served at noon, Monday through Friday. In addition, free van transportation is available to both activity centers for seniors living in the city limits of Tacoma. The Center Supervisor of the activity center closest to you can help you register for van transportation.
Also, if you are looking for volunteer opportunities, the senior centers can help you find a good fit. Placements are based on skills, interests and time availability. University internships are also available and set up through the department to assure credit and completed requirements.
Volunteers can serve as program planners, activity aides, instructors, dinning room aides, kitchen aides, receptionists, instructors, special events assistants, case aides, and information & assistance aides.
For more information contact Virginia Pace at the Beacon (253) 591-5083 or Willow Eaton at the Lighthouse (253) 591-5080.
