Taking control of our destiny

The odds were stacked against Don Hussey. At an early age and for most of his childhood, Hussey was surrounded by hatefulness, heavy drinking, deprivation, foul language, cracks in the head, abject poverty, and people going nowhere. Having been subjected to one hardship followed by another, anyone would have surely dismissed any chance he might have for a successful and fulfilling life. Anyone that is, but not him.
“Success in life, however you define it, is largely self-directed and rarely handed to you,” says Hussey. “No matter the condition or circumstance of your birth, the fact you were born in America gives you the freedom and opportunity to realize your potential. Nothing worthwhile is possible, however, without hard work, determination, and a willingness to brush aside the setbacks. In my case, I left home at an early age to find my place in the world. I never looked back and I never gave up.”
Hussey met the adversity that life presented him with unyielding determination and courage. His newly released memoir, Ticket to Ride, the Promise of America takes readers on the journey he had set out on at an early age putting as must distance as he could between the hardships of his youth. It is a message he hopes will resonate with American youth, revealing how important it is to take the first step, the first class, the first lesson, the first job, and begin your own journey.
