The Grotto Welcomes All to Enjoy Peaceful Nature

grotto 2Looking for some solitude, a place to meditate or simply appreciate nature? Then, consider spending several hours at The Grotto. It is an internationally-renowned Catholic shrine and botanical garden located minutes from downtown Portland.  Formally The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, The Grotto provides a peaceful retreat for more than 300,000 visitors each year from all faiths and all walks of life.
The Grotto is surrounded by natural beauty. With over 62-acres of manicured gardens and paths visitors are invited to enjoy the plaza and upper levels during any season year round. The plaza level of The Grotto, with its walking paths, showcases native northwest plants, beautiful statues, and Chapel of Mary. The Upper Level Gardens located 110 feet above The Grotto’s lower level sits at the top of the north face of Rocky Butte.
Visitors will find an inspiring landscape with manicured gardens and walking paths. There are numerous chapels, statues, walking paths and reflective spaces on the upper level. The upper level Gardens are possibly the best kept secret in Portland as well as one of its largest green spaces.
The heart of the shrine is Our Lady’s Grotto, a rock cave carved into the base of a 110-foot cliff.  The Grotto’s Chapel of Mary, Stations of The Cross trail, Gift Shop, Conference Center and Visitor Complex are located on the plaza level with Our Lady’s Grotto.grotto
In The Grotto’s Upper Level Gardens, visitors are delighted to discover the manicured gardens, religious artwork, and beautiful panoramic views of the Columbia River Valley and Mt. St. Helens.  Also on the upper level are the cliff side Meditation Chapel and the Servite Monastery.
There is no charge to visit The Grotto’s plaza level.  A small fee is charged to visit the Upper Level Gardens. Fee is shown below.
The Grotto is open daily at 9 a.m. throughout the year.
The Grotto is a non-profit organization supported solely by the proceeds of its gift shop and donations. It is administered by the Order of Friar Servants of Mary, USA Province.  The Grotto endeavors to serve all people.
