Tips for Eating Right on Vacation

5-Tips-for-Heart-Healthy-Snacking-700x395A recent blog on travelguard.com suggests a number of tips for healthy eating while on vacation. On our big trip to Myanmar(Burma) this summer my son and I had little choice but to eat healthy for several reasons. For one, it was so hot and muggy we didn’t feel like a noon meal. We didn’t even feel like snacking on junk food.
Otherwise, we decided to eat at the cleanest restaurants we could find to avoid the “tourista.”  Despite suggestions that street food was O.K., we couldn’t eat it because we had seen the meat covered in flies at various markets.
However, most people travel to places that offer endless indulgences. According to this travel insurance blog here are several reminders about how to eat healthy when on vacation:
Share the Wealth
Try sharing desserts and foods with your travel buddy; you’ll get to try more tasty dishes while not overindulging yourself.
Walk it Off
Vacation is the perfect opportunity to take a walk and get in some exercise. With all the sightseeing and gorgeous scenery there’s ample opportunity to offset any extra calories you might consume.
A Treat a Day
Try to keep your treats to one a day and after that opt for healthier choices. No deprivation, just moderation.
 Skip the Mini-Bar
The items in the fridge are typically very pricey and certainly not healthy.
Drink Water
Avoid dehydration, carry water with you wherever you go. Drinking water throughout the day can also help to curb your appetite helping to reduce your snack cravings all day.
Small Plates
If you’re heading to the buffet line, use the smaller dessert plates to load up your meal.
Snack Right
If you’re looking for a snack, stick to fresh fruits and veggies that are high in nutrients.
