Travel to Hood River to Sailboard, Run New Half-Marathon

Wind surfing capital of the world is Hood River’s latest distinction. Previously known for growing luscious apples, pears, cherries, peaches and other fruits, and for the view of the majestic snowcapped peak of Mt. Hood, Hood River has become the destination of choice for wind surfers from around the world. The winds from the Columbia River Gorge, best during the middle of the day, create ideal conditions for riding the waves. To enjoy the view of “boardheads” at play, drive to the Columbia Gorge Sailpark or follow Second Street to the waterfront.
Soon, Hood River will also be known as a running destination. Those passionate about running will want to participate in the first ever The Bridge of the Gods Half-Marathon and 10K  scheduled for Sunday, August 10, 2014. They are in for a treat running the first half-mile across the bridge with its world-class views of the Columbia River Gorge.
Hood River welcomes other sports enthusiasts in all seasons. In addition to being the windsurfing capital of the world, it offers kiteboarding and stand-up paddleboarding, mountain and road biking, hiking, whitewater kayaking and rafting, fishing, and world-class skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. With two ports and two boat basins, the area also serves both commercial as well as recreational boating.
The fertile Hood River Valley has been famous for its orchards for more than a century. From blossom time to the turning of the leaves, the more 14,000 acres of commercial pear, apple, cherry, and peach orchardsprovide miles of scenic beauty. Fruit grown here is of such exceptional quality that the county leads the world in Anjou pear production, and 50%of the nation’s winter pear crop comes from Hood River. The local “Fruit Loop” is a favorite with visitors and locals alike.
Livability and quality of life are priorities in Hood River County. Our mild climate and clean mountain air, our year-round recreational activities for the whole family, and our fresh local culinary delights and award-winning wineries make it a popular destination for visitors from around the world. Festivals, art and cultural happenings, plays and music, and sporting events occur throughout the year.

After a short sprint through town runners will head into Marine Park were the sternwheeler is located and across the bridge that spans the historic locks to finish on Thunder Island.  At the finish will be a beer garden, music and expo transforming the small Thunder Island into a rocking big party right in the middle of the Columbia River.
