Spokane – Washington’s Final Frontier

While the moniker “Washington’s final frontier” may sound a bit exaggerated, the branding motto does describe one of the Northwest’s more wild and wooly destinations. But wooly is no exaggeration given its big mountains and valleys remain home to grizzly bears and caribou.
Spokane is the state’s second largest city. And although it has earned bragging rights in the wooly and outdoor departments, it is also home to a sophisticated city life that includes ground-breaking distilleries and attractive night life. What is unique is that both aspects enjoy a robust co-exist.
For example, City Hall is but a stone’s throw from Spokane Falls, the nation’s second largest urban waterfall. River park Square (riverparkssquare.com) a vibrant shopping hub, overlooks the Spokane river’s free-flowing waters. And Riverfront Park (spokaneriverfrontpark.com) created in 1974 when Spokane became the smallest city to host the World’s Fair, has 100 acres of tranquility and wildlife in the heart of downtown.
Meanwhile, just off I-5 Spokane is the gateway to five ski mountains, pristine hiking in the Spokane River Gorge and miles of epic single-track in 14,000-acre Riverside State Park (parks.wa.gov).
Spokane is a great, easy to access destination for Northwesterners looking for sun and a derth of moss. As another mottos reports, “visit Spokane: Near Nature, Near Perfect.”
