How to Start Spending More Time Outdoors

Making time to go outdoors can be difficult for those who aren’t used to doing so. The benefits are clear–it’s very good for your mental and physical health. Here are some fun hobbies you can try that will help you spend more time outdoors.

Start Hiking

Hiking is a great way to start because of just how expansive it can be. You can start hiking within a huge range of difficulty. It can be anything from taking a scenic walk to an all-day venture that takes you to the very peak of a mountain.

You get to enjoy nature from an endless list of perspectives. You can hike on beaches, deserts, mountains, hills, and plains. You can usually find good local spots to explore, although the variety and quality of the options will depend heavily on where you live. If you’re not used to hiking regularly, start with something manageable and work your way up.

Take Up Water Sports

Nothing guarantees a good time quite like water sports. Not only do you have a wide variety of options, but you’ll always be sure that you get to cool off and have fun no matter what. Swimming is cheap and accessible for almost everyone. Other relatively easy and accessible sports include tubing, boogie boarding, and surfing.

Mexico has many great beaches for surfing, including many beaches ideal for beginners–so keep an eye out when you go on vacation. More expensive and advanced options include water skiing, jet skiing, and white water rafting.

Get Together With Friends

Every health goal is easier if you have someone to complete it with. Every sport or activity is also more fun if you have people to compete against. The number-one way to get yourself outside is to talk to friends and family who have outdoor hobbies. That can be hiking, water sports, camping, hunting, or even just bird watching. Whatever it is, it’s a good idea to have someone who can help you figure out the beginner’s process. It also helps to have someone to make plans with. That way, you’re more likely to follow through when the time actually arrives.

The outdoors are an incredible gift. Too many people nowadays rarely take advantage of the incredible diversity found in the natural world around us. North America especially has a vast diversity of climates and environments ripe for exploration. You won’t regret setting aside the time and effort needed to discover what’s in it for you.
